     Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

For quite some time now we've been hearing about

the multitude of people experiencing PTSD (Post

Traumatic Stress Disorder) with little to no support.

These individuals include soldiers, fire fighters,

police officers, disaster workers, victims of disasters -

and often forgotten, the family members of each and

every one.

PTSD when left untreated can negatively affect all

those involved for their entire lives - down to the

youngest child.

Symptoms of this very real problem generally don't

reveal themselves until several months after the

traumatic event.  The symptoms can include:  sudden

intense anger for no apparent reason triggered by

a variety of things such as sounds, smells, or words;

repeat nightmares and/or flashbacks of the traumatic

event you experienced; increased depression and general

irritability.

Acute Stress Disorder, which is related to PTSD, has

similar symptoms which develop much sooner than with

PTSD.   Symptoms with SAD usually appear  within a

month of the traumatic event and generally end

within a few weeks.  However, left untreated, the

symptoms can worsen and can last a lifetime as we see

with many Viet Nam veterans.

If face to face therapy isn't possible for you right

now due to your current location, work schedule or

financial situation, a trained and licensed, caring,

human voice is the next best thing.

The longer we try to ignore our demons the stronger

they become.  The sooner we confront and deal with

them the sooner they will disappear.
